Eine mysteriöse Wolke nähert sich der Erde und zerstört alles, was sich ihr in den Weg stellt. In Anbetracht der drohenden Gefahr entreißt Admiral Kirk dem jungen Captain der soeben renovierten Enterprise, Willard Decker, das Kommando und eilt zusammen mit seiner schnell wieder zusammengefügten alten Crew dem todbringenden Gebilde entgegen. Kirk und seine Crew erfahren, dass die Wolke V’ger heißt und auf der Erde ihren Schöpfer zu finden hofft. Im Alleingang findet Spock dank der vulkanischen Gedankenverschmelzung heraus, dass sich unter der Wolke eine komplexe Maschine verbirgt. Kirk gelingt es, V’ger zu überzeugen, ihn mit ein paar Getreuen in das Innere der Wolke zu lassen. Dort will er ihr Geheimnis lüften.
