Aspiring filmmakers Mel Funn, Marty Eggs and Dom Bell go to a financially troubled studio with an idea for a silent movie. In an effort to make the movie more marketable, they attempt to recruit a number of big name stars to appear, while the studio's creditors attempt to thwart them.

Mel Funn (Mel Brooks), un cinéaste hollywoodien sorti d'une cure de désintoxication, tente de convaincre les responsables d'un studio de cinéma de produire le premier film muet réalisé depuis quarante ans. Pour ce faire, Funn et ses amis (Marty Feldman et Dom DeLuise) vont approcher plusieurs acteurs connus afin que ceux-ci jouent dans leur film.

Un regista alcolizzato, insieme ai suoi due bizzarri assistenti, tenta di salvare una casa di produzione indipendente realizzando un film muto e puntando sulla partecipazione di grandi nomi del cinema: Paul Newman, Liza Minnelli, James Caan, Anne Bancroft e il mimo francese Marcel Marceau che pronuncia l'unica parola del film. Film ineguale e squilibrato come la fantasia del suo autore; raffica di gag mute, doppi sensi e demenzialità ante litteram. Alcuni momenti, però, sono indimenticabili.
