When Marie St. Clair believes she has been jilted by her artist fiance Jean, she decides to leave for Paris on her own. After spending a year in the city as a mistress of the wealthy Pierre Revel, she is reunited with Jean by chance. This leaves her with the choice between a glamorous life in Paris, and the true love she left behind.

Marie Saint-Clair et Jean Millet, devant le refus de leurs parents respectifs, decident de s'enfuir pour se marier. Ils doivent se retrouver a la gare. Mais Jean est retenu au dernier moment par son pere qui vient de subir une attaque cardiaque. Marie part seule. Un an plus tard, a Paris, ils se retrouvent par hasard. Marie est devenue la maitresse d'un homme d'affaires. Les deux jeunes gens s'aiment toujours et Marie decide de quitter son protecteur. C'est alors qu'elle surprend une conversation entre Jean et sa mere qui s'oppose categoriquement a cette union.
