Der Zirkus

Auf einem Rummelplatz wird Charlie wegen eines Taschendiebstahls, den ein anderer begangen hat, von der Polizei gejagt. Er flüchtet sich in ein Zirkuszelt, wo er mitten in die Vorstellung gerät und unfreiwillig Heiterkeit erzeugt. Er wird vom Zirkusdirektor als Clown angestellt, wegen Unfähigkeit sofort wieder entlassen, aber schließlich als ungeschickter Kulissenschieber doch noch eine Lachattraktion. Von der schönen Kunstreiterin, einer Stieftochter des Direktors erfährt er, wie sehr das Publikum ihn liebt und wie sehr er ausgebeutet wird. Er verliebt sich in sie und bemüht sich, sie vor den Rohheiten des Direktors zu schützen. Als sie sich ihrerseits in Rex, den König der Lüfte, verliebt, versucht er, den Rivalen auszustechen, indem er selbst auf das Hochseil geht...

Charlot, pris pour un pickpocket, se réfugie dans un cirque et déboule sur la piste en plein spectacle. Son arrivée fait rire le public et le directeur l'engage aussitôt comme clown. Charlot devient amoureux de l'écuyère mais son rival le fait renvoyer.

Disoccupato, inseguito da un poliziotto, Charlot trova rifugio e lavoro in un circo come clown (involontario) e s'innamora della cavallerizza. Pur nella ricchezza delle invenzioni comiche (Charlot sulla corda, assalito dalle scimmie; il baraccone degli specchi, ecc.), appare un riepilogo di motivi già sfruttati, ma approfondisce con tristezza struggente la dimensione sentimentale del suo personaggio di reietto. ("Un debole omino calpestato/ da Los Angeles a qui/ recita attraverso gli oceani..." V. Majakovskij.) Quando, però, il film che lo stesso autore non teneva tra i suoi più riusciti ritornò in circolazione negli anni '60, in una nuova edizione musicata dallo stesso Chaplin, esso incantò un'altra generazione di spettatori. Non a caso Federico Fellini lo adorava.
