Eddie Morra ist am Boden. Dank chronischer Lustlosigkeit und Schreibblockade bleiben Erfolge als Autor so illusionär wie die als Mann, denn nach der Hoffnung hat ihn auch seine geduldige Freundin Lindy verlassen. Als ihm der Zufall jedoch die geheim entwickelte Designerdroge NZT in die Hände spielt, steigt der Verlierer kometenhaft zum Gewinner auf. Grenzen scheint es für Eddies Genialität nun nicht mehr zu geben - bis auf jene, die ihm die Nebenwirkungen der Droge und andere, sehr gefährliche Konsumenten setzen.

Edward « Eddie » Morra, écrivain sous contrat, ne parvient pas à remplir la moindre page de son premier roman. Habitant un appartement miteux à New York, l'allure négligée, sâle, il vit aux crochets de sa petite amie Lindy, qui lasse de le voir incapable d'avancer dans la vie, le quitte. Il retrouve par hasard Vernon, son ex-beau frère, ancien dealer, qui dit travailler désormais dans l'industrie pharmaceutique. Il propose à Eddie de tester une substance en cours d'homologation, le NZT. Eddie accepte et sa vie s'en trouve bouleversée, car le NZT développe en quelques minutes les facultés cognitives de celui qui l'ingère, améliorant considérablement ses perceptions, sa mémoire et ses capacités de raisonnement. Commence alors pour lui une vie « sans limites », il renoue avec Lindy et devient le gourou de Carl Van Loon, redoutable homme d'affaires. Mais il va rapidement découvrir que le NZT a des effets secondaires létaux et qu'il n'est pas le seul à en connaître l'existence...

Eddie Morra è uno scrittore in crisi depressiva, incapace di cominciare il primo romanzo che gli è stato commissionato. Per questa sua tendenza all'autocommiserazione e al boicottaggio autoindotto, la fidanzata decide di lasciarlo. Lo stesso giorno incontra per caso Vernon, il fratello della donna con cui è stato sposato per poco tempo molti anni prima. Per placare i suoi tormenti, Vernon, che è un ex-spacciatore, gli offre un farmaco in via di licenza in grado di aumentare le capacità dei recettori neuronali ed attivare tutte le aree del cervello. Il farmaco ha subito un effetto incredibile su Eddie, facendogli non solo recuperare l'autostima perduta ma anche tutti i ricordi più distanti e reconditi. Quando l'effetto svanisce, decide di tornare subito da Vernon per farsi dare altre pillole, ma una volta raggiunto il suo appartamento, trova l'ex-cognato morto sul divano, ucciso da qualcuno interessato allo stesso farmaco.
