Patrick Wilson kam am 3. Juli 1973 in Virginia zur Welt und besuchte die Carnegie-Mellon Universität. Vor seiner Schauspielkarriere sang und tanzte er unter anderem am New Yorker Broadway in den Musicals The Full Monty und Oklahoma. Für seine herausragenden Leistungen wurde Patrick Wilson 2001 und 2002 jeweils als Bester Hauptdarsteller mit einem Tony Award ausgezeichnet. Die Musicalerfahrung machte sich bezahlt, als Patrick Wilson 2004 neben Gerard Butler und Emmy Rossum den Part des schönen Raoul in Das Phantom der Oper spielte und sang. Bereits 2003 hatte er sich einen Namen durch die Rolle des schwulen Joe in der Mini-Serie Engel in Amerika gemacht. Hierfür wurde er als Bester Nebendarsteller für einen Emmys und einen Golden Globe nominiert. Um sein Repertoire an verschiedenen Rollen zu füllen, spielte Patrick Wilson 2009 in der Comic-Verfilmung Watchmen – Die Wächter Dan Dreiberg bzw. Nite Owl II. Patrick Wilson ist seit 2005 mit der Schauspielerin Dagmara Dominczyk verheiratet. Das Paar hat zwei Kinder.

Conosciuto per la sua versatilità, ha costruito una carriera tra cinema, televisione e teatro, diventando uno degli interpreti più riconoscibili del cinema horror contemporaneo grazie al ruolo di Ed Warren nella saga The Conjuring. Dopo essersi affermato a teatro con numerose produzioni di Broadway, ricevette due candidature ai Tony Award per le sue interpretazioni nei musical The Full Monty e Oklahoma!. In seguito iniziò a ottenere maggiore popolarità sul grande schermo grazie a film come Hard Candy (2005), Little Children (2006) e Watchmen (2009), nel quale interpretò Nite Owl II. La consacrazione internazionale arrivò con The Conjuring - L'evocazione (2013), dove interpretò Ed Warren, investigatore del paranormale realmente esistito, al fianco di Vera Farmiga nel ruolo di Lorraine Warren. Il successo del film diede origine a una delle saghe horror più famose degli ultimi anni, con Wilson protagonista anche dei successivi capitoli della serie. Il suo personaggio è diventato una delle figure più amate del franchise. Oltre a The Conjuring, ha recitato nella saga horror Insidious interpretando Josh Lambert, ruolo che ha ulteriormente consolidato la sua presenza nel genere.
