Laurent Petitgirard (born 10 June 1950, in Paris) is a French classical composer and conductor. Laurent Petitgirard studied piano with Serge Petitgirard and composition with Alain Kremski. He has worked as conductor with dozens of orchestras, including the Paris Opera Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, Orchestre National de France, Utah Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, National Orchestra of Spain, Moscow State Orchestra, China National Symphonic Orchestra and many others. In 1989 he founded the Orchestre Symphonique Français which he conducted until 1996, and also directed the Festival and the Academy of Flaine from 1986 to 1997. He has been the music director of the Orchestre Colonne, in Paris, since December 2004 and ended his contract two years before the end in April 2018 to concentrate on composition and guest conducting. He will still conduct the Colonne Orchestra, as a guest conductor, in the next seasons. Petitgirard has recorded dozens of CDs of music by a variety of composers, such as Honegger, Ravel, Dukas, Debussy, Saint-Saëns and others. As composer, Petitgirard has written scores for films by Otto Preminger, Jacques Demy, Francis Girod, Peter Kassovitz, Pierre Granier Deferre, and many others, with many of his film soundtracks being released on CD. He composed the theme and various incidental music for the television program Maigret. Petitgirard's first opera, Joseph Merrick, The Elephant Man, was premiered in 2002 by the Prague State Opera, with Petitgirard conducting. Petigirard later recorded the opera for the Naxos label with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo and with Nathalie Stutzmann in the title role. Other works by Petigirard include Le Fou d'Elsa, a cycle of six songs to poems by Louis Aragon for mezzo and orchestra, Le Plus Ardent à Vivre, a septet with harp, Poème for large string orchestra, and Dialogue for viola and orchestra. Petitgirard's second opera, Guru, was released on the Naxos label in 2011 and its stage premiere occurred on 28 September 2018 in a production directed by Damian Cruden for Opera Na Zamku in Szczecin (Poland), with the composer conducting. Many of his other works are also available on the Naxos label, with the composer conducting. Petitgirard has received a number of prizes, including the Young Composer's Prize of the SACD in 1987, the SACEM Prize in 1990, the Grand Prix Lycéen for Composers in 2000 for his Cello Concerto, and the Prix Musique 2001 of the SACD for his opera Joseph Merrick, The Elephant Man. In December 2000 he was elected Member of the French Institute, and elected Perpetual Secretary of the beaux-arts Academy on 1 February 2017 . Laurent Petitgirard est un compositeur et chef d'orchestre français, né le 10 juin 1950 à Paris. Laurent Petitgirard naît à Paris le 10 juin 1950. Il étudie le piano avec son père Serge Petitgirard, élève d'Alfred Cortot et d'Yves Nat, et la composition avec son frère aîné Alain Kremski (Kremski est le nom de leur mère). Il compose plus d'une vingtaine d'œuvres de musique symphonique et près de cent cinquante musiques de films ou pour la télévision, dans un style «toujours raffiné, dramatique et précis à l'image». Il est notamment l'auteur de la musique de plusieurs films de Francis Girod et de la série des Maigret. Il est également un compositeur d'œuvres lyriques avec entre autres, en 1998, son premier opéra Joseph Merrick dit Elephant man sur un livret d'Éric Nonn créé en 2002 à l'Opéra d'État de Prague dans une mise en scène de Daniel Mesguich. Son deuxième opéra, Guru (commande d'état), sur un livret de Xavier Maurel, traite de la manipulation mentale. Il a été enregistré à Budapest pour le label Naxos en octobre 2010 sous la direction du compositeur et a été créé le 28 septembre 2018 au Castle Opera de Szczecin (Pologne) dans une mise en scène de Damien Cruden, direction musicale Laurent Petitgirard et avec Hubert Claessens, Paul Gaugler et Sonia Petrovna. L'enregistrement de ses trois concertos, interprétés par Augustin Dumay, Gérard Caussé et Gary Hoffman, de ses six poèmes symphoniques et de la version intégrale de Daphnis et Chloé de Maurice Ravel avec l'orchestre et le chœur de l'Opéra national de Bordeaux est réalisé pour le label Naxos. La musique qu'il a composée pour le spectacle de Sonia Petrovna sur le Petit Prince d'Antoine de Saint-Exupéry est enregistrée chez Naxos en août 2013. Sa dernière œuvre est un ballet tiré du SI YEOU KI (The Journey to the West) pour la chorégraphe chin oise Whang Yabin. Il compose actuellement un concerto pour Hautbois et orchestre dédié à François Leleux. Il fonde en 1989 l'Orchestre symphonique français qu'il dirige jusqu'en 1996. Il est un chef d'orchestre que les grandes formations musicales du monde invitent: Orchestre de l'Opéra national de Paris, Orchestre philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, Orchestre national de France, Orchestre national de Lyon, Orchestre national Bordeaux Aquitaine, Orchestre philharmonique de Nice, Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg, Orchestre symphonique de Bamberg, Orchestre symphonique de Berlin, Orchestre de la Tonhalle de Zurich, Orchestre de la Fenice, Orchestre de la Suisse romande, Orchestre national d'Espagne, Orchestre d'État de Moscou, Orchestres Philharmonique et KBS de Séoul, Orchestre National de Chine. En 2004, il est élu directeur musical de l'Orchestre Colonne à Paris. Son contrat est périodiquement renouvelé, portant son engagement jusqu'en juin 2020. Il a mis fin à ses fonctions de directeur musical en avril 2018, deux ans avant la fin de son mandat, pour se consacrer à la composition et à son activité de chef invité.
