Peter Dennis Blandford "Pete" Townshend (born 19 May 1945) is an English rock guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and author, known principally as the guitarist and songwriter for the rock group The Who, as well as for his own solo career. His career with The Who spans more than forty years, during which time the band grew to be considered one of the most influential bands of the 60s and 70s, and, according to Eddie Vedder, "possibly the greatest live band ever." Townshend is the primary songwriter for The Who, having written well over one hundred songs for the band's eleven studio albums, including concept albums and the rock operas Tommy and Quadrophenia, plus popular rock and roll radio staples like Who's Next, and dozens more that appeared as non-album singles, bonus tracks on reissues, and tracks on rarities compilations like Odds & Sods. He has also written over one hundred songs that have appeared on his solo albums, as well as radio jingles and television theme songs. Although known primarily as a guitarist, he also plays other instruments such as keyboards, banjo, accordion, synthesiser, bass guitar and drums, on his own solo albums, several Who albums, and as a guest contributor to a wide array of other artists' recordings. Townshend has never had formal lessons in any of the instruments he plays. Townshend has also been a contributor and author of newspaper and magazine articles, book reviews, essays, books, and scripts, as well as collaborating as a lyricist (and composer) for many other musical acts. Townshend was ranked #3 in Dave Marsh's list of Best Guitarists in The New Book of Rock Lists, #10 in Gibson.com's list of the top fifty guitarists, and #50 in Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 list: 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Townshend was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Who in 1990. Er verfasste den Großteil der Songs der Gruppe, spielt auf den Alben E-Gitarre, gelegentlich auch Keyboards und singt Background. Berüchtigt waren in den 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren seine Live-Auftritte, an deren Ende er gemeinsam mit dem The-Who-Schlagzeuger Keith Moon oft das Instrumentarium der Band zerstörte. Sein aggressiver Gitarrenstil beeinflusste die Entwicklung der Musikstile Hard Rock, Heavy Metal und Punk.

Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend, né le 19 mai 1945 à Chiswick (Londres), est un guitariste, chanteur et auteur-compositeur rock britannique, membre fondateur, leader et principal compositeur du groupe Who. Il fut dans les années 1960, avec Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton et Jimi Hendrix, par son style et son jeu de scène, l'un des guitaristes les plus novateurs du rock. Compositeur de la plupart des chansons des Who, il fut l'un des premiers guitaristes à utiliser des effets comme le larsen et la technique des accords dite en power chords dans un style qui préfigurera le hard rock et le punk. Pete Townshend a été aussi le premier à placer des boucles sonores de synthétiseurs sur des chansons rock (album Who's Next en 1971, Won't Get Fooled Again et Baba O'Riley) et à écrire des opéras rock (la chanson A Quick One, While He's Away en 1966, préfigurant Tommy en 1969). Il s'est aussi rendu célèbre en exécutant des "moulinets" (rotation de son bras droit pour frapper ses accords) et en brisant ses guitares sur scène. Musicien accompli, Peter Townshend joue aussi du piano, du synthétiseur (ARP 2500 et 2600), du banjo, de la basse, de la batterie et même de l'accordéon, et a parfois enregistré ces instruments sur certains titres de ses albums solo ou avec The Who. En 2003, le magazine Rolling Stone l'a classé 50e meilleur guitariste de tous les temps1. En 2011, il passe à la 10e place de ce même classement. Les décès du batteur Keith Moon en 1978 puis du bassiste John Entwistle en 2002 n'ont pas mis fin aux activités des Who, Townshend et le chanteur Roger Daltrey ont continué dans les décennies suivantes à se produire dans le monde entier avec de nouveaux musiciens comme le batteur Zak Starkey (le fils de Ringo Starr des Beatles) et le bassiste Pino Palladino et sortent notamment un douzième album studio des Who en 2019 qui rencontre un beau succès commercial
