Chad Gaylord Smith (born October 25, 1961) is an American musician who has been the drummer of the band Red Hot Chili Peppers since 1988. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. Smith is also the drummer of the hard rock supergroup Chickenfoot, formed in 2008, and of the all-instrumental outfit Chad Smith's Bombastic Meatbats, formed in 2007. He worked with The Chicks on Taking the Long Way, an album that won 5 Grammy Awards in 2007. Smith has recorded with Glenn Hughes, Johnny Cash, John Fogerty, Geezer Butler, Jennifer Nettles, Kid Rock, Jake Bugg, the Avett Brothers, Joe Satriani, Post Malone, Eddie Vedder, Lana Del Rey and Halsey. In 2010, joined by Dick Van Dyke and Leslie Bixler, he released Rhythm Train, a children's album which featured Smith singing and playing various instruments. In 2020, Smith co-wrote and performed as part of the backing band on Ozzy Osbourne's album, Ordinary Man. Spin magazine placed Smith at #10 on their list of the "100 Greatest Drummers of Alternative Music" in May 2013. Readers of UK-based Rhythm magazine ranked Smith and Red Hot Chili Pepper bassist Flea the fourth-greatest rhythm section of all time in their June 2013 issue. Smith is also known for his charity work especially with young musicians. He has been a lobbyist in support of music education in U.S. public schools. Chad Gaylord Smith (* 25. Oktober 1961 in Saint Paul, Minnesota) ist ein US-amerikanischer Schlagzeuger und Mitglied der kalifornischen Funk-Rock-Band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Aufgewachsen ist er in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Er ersetzte Ende 1988 Jack Irons, der die Band wegen Hillel Slovaks Tod und den daraus resultierenden chaotischen Umständen verlassen hatte. Als namenloser Bewerber für die Stelle des freien Drummers gelang ihm über eine Jam mit den Red Hot Chili Peppers, bei dem er sich durch seine einzigartigen Fähigkeiten sofort in die Bandmechanik einfügte, auf Empfehlung von Produzent Michael Beinhorn der Einstieg in die Gruppe. 1993 veröffentlichte er mit „Red Hot Rhythm Method“ einen Lehrfilm für fortgeschrittene Schlagzeuger. Seine Fähigkeiten als Schlagzeuger zeigen sich auch an seiner Mitwirkung an vielen Alben außerhalb der Arbeit mit den Red Hot Chili Peppers: Zwischen 2007 und 2008 war er als Schlagzeuger in einer Jazzband in Japan tätig. Seit September 2008 arbeitete er in der neuen Supergroup Chickenfoot (mit Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony und Joe Satriani) an einem Album namens Chickenfoot, das am 5. Juni 2009 in den USA veröffentlicht wurde. Das Nachfolgealbum ist Chickenfoot III, welches ab dem 23. September 2011 erhältlich ist. Im Herbst 2009 erschien die CD Meet the Meatbats von den Chad Smith’s Bombastic Meatbats. Hier beweist Smith die gelungene Synthese aus Funkdrumming und Fusion Jazz. Der Rolling Stone listete ihn 2016 auf Rang 64 der 100 besten Schlagzeuger aller Zeiten.
