La famiglia Dunphy accompagna Alex a visitare uno dei possibili college a cui iscriversi. Claire cerca di spingerla ad iscriversi a tale college, poiché è vicino a casa, ma lei, per lo stesso motivo, è più propensa ad iscriversi ad uno nell'altra parte del paese. Tuttavia, dopo aver flirtato con uno dei ragazzi in visita al college, cambia idea. Nel frattempo, Phil, Luke ed Haley accettano di sottoporsi ad un test in uno dei laboratori del campus. Mentre sono in una saletta di attesa, si convincono di essere sottoposti ad un esperimento psico-sociale, vivendo momenti molto stressanti. Scopriranno poi che il test consisteva nel compilare un semplice questionario. Jay, come regalo di anniversario alla moglie, decide di non comprare l'ennesimo costoso gioiello e donarle un'opera di ceramica da lui fatta a mano. Gloria, non essendo abituata a ricevere regali del genere, la rompe pensando che il vero regalo sia all'interno. Mitchell e Cameron cercano invece di farsi un fotoritratto con la figlia, ma dovranno fare i conti con un suo strano modo di sorridere e la sua permalosità nel ricevere critiche.
