Dans un appartement luxueux, Sorenson et Sipowicz enquêtent sur le vol d'objets d'arts appartenant à Noel Beller, un collectionneur. Ce dernier a quitté les lieux avant l'arrivée des agents, non sans avoir indiqué sur un petit mot à leur intention qu'il avait besoin d'un verre d'alcool.
