Earl is given an assignment after attending a prison class which focuses on creative writing: to write a story. Soon Earl realises that writing is harder than he thought.

Im Knast findet ein Kurs für kreatives Schreiben statt, an dem auch Earl teilnehmen muss. Sie sollen eine erfundene Geschichte schreiben. Allen gelingt das vortrefflich, nur Earl hat so seine Probleme damit. Als sogar Joy, Darnell und Randy ihre Geschichten niedergeschrieben haben, ist Earl zunächst tiefst verzweifelt. Aber da hat er eine rettende Idee. Wozu soll er eine Geschichte erfinden, er kann doch einfach über sein ganz normales Leben berichten.
