Tom's skills as leader are tested to their extremes when they take part in an Extreme Emergency Response Initiative Exercise (EERIE) to test their response to nuclear, chemical or biological act in central London, but when the power in the grid is cut and Harry starts to feel ill, they soon begin to suspect it's for real.

'équipe du MI-5 vaque à ses occupations quotidiennes lorsque se déclenche l'alarme indiquant un exercice EERIE, répétition des manoeuvres à effectuer en cas de crise majeure, comme une attaque nucléaire ou bactériologique. Le dispositif implique de centraliser toutes les informations afin d'optimiser la réaction des autorités. Les capacités de Tom en tant que chef d'équipe sont alors mises à rude épreuve. Mais lorsqu'une panne de courant isole le bâtiment et que Harry se sent mal, Tom commence à craindre qu'il ne s'agisse pas d'un simple exercice, mais d'une véritable situation de crise. Les membres du MI-5 semblent être les seuls survivants d'une contamination par un gaz mortel...
