Scully's recent failing health is revealed to be an inoperable cancer in her skull, which appears to be common among abductees and she attempts to come to terms with her condition. Meanwhile, Mulder and the Lone Gunmen break into a high-security research lab to find the cure that could save her life.

Bei Dana Scully wird ein bösartiger Gehirntumor festgestellt, der inoperabel ist. Trotzdem arbeitet sie weiter mit Fox Mulder an dem Fall einer Gruppe von Frauen, die alle behaupten, von Außerirdischen entführt worden zu sein. Einige von ihnen sind inzwischen tot. Mulder und Kurt Crawford gelingt es, sich in das Computersystem des Lombard-Forschungsinstituts zu hacken. Scullys Kollege stößt dort auf Menschenversuche, zu deren Zweck man einst auch Dana Scully missbraucht hat.

Scully vient d'apprendre qu'elle est atteinte d'une tumeur inopérable, située entre les sinus et le cerveau. Elle décide de contacter une association de femmes, qui ont autrefois été enlevées et ont toutes développé la même maladie après s'être fait ôter une plaque de métal du cou. Parallèlement, Mulder soupçonne le Dr Scanlon, qui a traité le cancer de toutes ces femmes, d'être à l'origine des enlèvements...
