It's open season in New York when not one but two powerful judges are executed. At first they seem to have no connection; one was a family court judge whose entire family was attacked, the other is an appellate court judge. After investigating the judges more thoroughly, Goren and Eames realise that their first set of suspects was simply a smokescreen, and there is a far more insidious threat. Their investigation leads them to a non-custodial father who has a beef with the court system.

Kurz nachdem sie einer Gruppe von Strafgefangenen das Besuchsrecht entzogen hat, wird Richterin Gloria Barton in ihrem Haus erschossen. Goren und Eames schalten sich ein und verdächtigen zunächst eine Vereinigung von Rechtsradikalen, doch die Spur führt ins Leere. Wenig später wird ein weiterer Richter erschossen. Am Tatort entdeckt man nicht nur Munition desselben Kalibers, sondern auch die gleichen seltenen Beerenfrüchte, die man bei Richterin Barton gefunden hatte. Die Ermittler klappern die Naturkostläden der Stadt ab und stoßen so auf einen gewissen Lloyd. Das Gericht hatte vor einiger Zeit seinen Sohn der Mutter zugesprochen, doch bei einem Unfall hatte sie das Kind in den Tod gefahren. Ermordet Lloyd nun aus Rache einen Richter nach dem anderen?
