Der Pessimist Carl Allen befindet sich in einem jener Teufelskreise, die sich aus einer negativen Einstellung dem Leben gegenüber und privaten Niederlagen ergeben. Eine Tages trifft er auf einen Motivationstrainer, der ihm die einfache Weisheit mitteilt, doch ausnahmslos alles zu bejahen. Es ist fast ein Wunder, wie ein kleines Wort ein ganzes Leben verändert und so schlittert Allen mit voller Fahrt in alle Situationen hinein, denen er früher aus dem Weg gegangen ist. Plötzlich bieten sich ihm ungeahnte Chancen, die allerdings auch mit Gefahren verbunden sind.

Carl Allen è un impiegato divorziato orgogliosamente chiuso nella sua solitudine e insensibile alle richieste altrui. I clienti gli chiedono un prestito e lui lo nega, gli amici gli chiedono compagnia e lui si tira indietro, cercando di farsi bastare un dvd sul divano. Si protegge dai colpi che la vita gli ha dimostrato di saper sferrare, ma quanto altro si preclude così facendo? L'incontro con un ex collega lo convince a partecipare ad un seminario di “positività”, in cui il guru di turno lo esorta a rivoluzionare la sua vita rispondendo di sì ad ogni richiesta. Improvvisamente, si ritrova ad apprendere il coreano, a prodigarsi per un barbone, a presenziare alle feste a tema del capoufficio e ad accettare il passaggio in scooter di una sconosciuta di nome Allison. Carl dice sì all'amore per costrizione, in attesa di dire no alla costrizione in nome dell'amore.
