A narcissistic TV weatherman, along with his attractive-but-distant producer, and his mawkish cameraman, is sent to report on Groundhog Day in the small town of Punxsutawney, where he finds himself repeating the same day over and over.

Es ist der 2. Februar, Murmeltiertag: Für eine Reportage über das alljährliche Wettervorhersage-Ritual verschlägt es den sarkastischen, verbitterten, stets miesgelaunten und unfreundlichen Wettermann Phil Connors, seine Produzentin Rita und den Kameramann Larry in das kleine Provinznest Punxsutawney. Ein ganz normaler Tag. Phil berichtet vom Murmeltier, das alljährlich aus seinem Bau gelockt wird, um das Wetter der kommenden Zeit vorherzusagen. Nebenbei flirtet er ein wenig mit Rita und gibt sich gewohnt sarkastisch-zynisch. Als Phil jedoch am darauffolgenden Tag aufwacht, ist dummerweise wieder der 2. Februar und außer ihm scheint niemand diese Wiederholung zu bemerken.

Phil Connors, présentateur météo grincheux et arrogant, doit tourner un reportage sur la fête de la marmotte. Mais lorsqu'il se réveille le lendemain, il découvre avec stupeur que la date n'a pas changé et qu'il est condamné à revivre un par un les événements de la veille. Connors se voit dès lors obligé de faire face à la répétition infinie du Jour de la marmotte.

Realizzato il servizio, vorrebbe partire subito, ma una tempesta di neve lo blocca. Prende alloggio in una locanda e, la mattina, svegliandosi rivive tutti i fatti del giorno prima. Così anche le mattine successive. Dapprima incredulo, quindi allarmato, poi atterrito, Phil volge però a suo favore la situazione.
