Kirk e McCoy, saliti a bordo del vascello nemico per prestare aiuto, vengono processati e condannati all'ergastolo nelle terribili miniere del satellite penitenziario di Rura Penthe. Grazie all'aiuto dell'affascinante aliena camaleontide Marthia, riescono pero' a fuggire non prima di aver scoperto che il complotto per eliminare i Klingon vede coinvolti insospettabili membri della federazione.
