Gaetano Liberatore (born 12 April 1953), better known as Tanino Liberatore, is an Italian comics author and illustrator. His best known fictional character is RanXerox. Born in Quadri (province of Chieti), Liberatore went to high school in Pescara where he met comics artist Andrea Pazienza. He later finished his architectural studies at the University of Rome. From 1974 to 1978, he designed record covers for RCA. In 1978 he met Stefano Tamburini and published his first work in Tamburini's comics magazine Cannibale. In 1978 Rank Xerox was born, a cyborg-punk, ultra strong creature created by Tamburini. Several stand alone hardcover albums ensued, translated in several languages. In 1980 he involved in the foundation of the magazine Frigidaire. Liberatore's work has been republished in several international comics magazines (Transfert, Métal Hurlant, A Suivre, L'Écho des savanes, Chic). The cover of Frank Zappa's The Man from Utopia album features an illustration by Tanino Liberatore, showing Zappa as RanXerox. In 1984 he drew the album cover for Beat Up, the first 7-inch release by New York City based ska band The Toasters. During this time he also created a few 'one of a kind' pieces of art work for Toasters frontman Robert "Bucket" Hingley. He has also done art direction for films. Tanino Liberatore, de son vrai nom Gaetano Liberatore, né à Quadri (Chieti), Italie le 12 avril 1953, est un auteur italien de bande dessinée. Il rencontre Tamburini en 1978 et commence à publier ses premières bandes dessinées dans Cannibale puis dans Frigidaire. En 1981, il publie le premier RanXerox où il peint un univers futuriste ultra violent de manière hyper réaliste. Cette série pré-publiée dans L'Écho des savanes reste de loin la plus célèbre de ses créations. Il s'installe en France en 1982 et illustre en 1983 la pochette de The Man From Utopia de Frank Zappa. Après le volume 2 de RanXerox, il ne fera plus que de rares incursions dans le monde de la bande dessinée. Il travaille alors dans le cinéma, collaborant notamment avec Alain Chabat et remportera le César 2003 des meilleurs costumes pour Astérix & Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre. Chabat co-scénarisera le troisième RanXerox en 1996. En 2007, cet auteur, somme toute plutôt rare, signe un nouvel album intitulé Lucy, l'espoir. Réalisé avec une autre de ses rencontres cinématographiques, Patrick Norbert, cet album explore l'univers des australopithèques et de Lucy dans un univers radicalement différent de RanXerox. Le trait de Liberatore est toujours aussi réaliste mais il est ici entièrement réalisé à l'ordinateur et se rapproche toujours plus de la photographie.
