Sir Ian Holm Cuthbert CBE (12 September 1931 – 19 June 2020) was an English actor. After beginning his career on the British stage as a leading member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, he became a successful and prolific performer on television and in films. He received numerous accolades including two BAFTA Awards and a Tony Award, along with nominations for an Academy Award and two Emmy Awards. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1989 by Queen Elizabeth II. Holm won the 1967 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor for his performance as Lenny in the Harold Pinter play The Homecoming. He won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor for his performance in the title role in the 1998 West End production of King Lear. For his television roles he received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for King Lear (1998), and the HBO film The Last of the Blonde Bombshells (2003). He gained acclaim for his role in The Bofors Gun (1968) winning the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and a BAFTA Award win for his role as athletics trainer Sam Mussabini in Chariots of Fire (1981). Other notable films he appeared in include Alien (1979), Brazil (1985), Henry V (1989), The Madness of King George (1994), The Fifth Element (1997), The Sweet Hereafter (1997), and The Aviator (2004). He gained wider appreciation for his role as the elderly Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Vor seiner Karriere als Film- und Fernsehschauspieler war Holm Mitglied der Royal Shakespeare Company. 1965 spielte er für die BBC-Verfilmung der Der Krieg der Rosen-Stücke (Heinrich VI. Teil 1–3 und Richard III.) Richard III. Er spielte außerdem in einer großen Anzahl von Shakespeare-Stücken (unter anderem Romeo, Heinrich V., Puck und Troilus) und machte sich einen Namen als herausragender Darsteller. Als er 1979 in dem Hollywood-Film Alien – Das unheimliche Wesen aus einer fremden Welt und 1981 in dem Oscar-Gewinner Die Stunde des Siegers mitwirkte – Holm war für die beste Nebenrolle nominiert – war er in Großbritannien bereits ein Star. Für Die Stunde des Siegers erhielt er außerdem noch einen Darstellerpreis bei den Internationalen Filmfestspielen von Cannes 1981. Auch in den Vereinigten Staaten erreichte er durch seine Darstellungen – vor allem in Shakespeare-Stücken – schon bald große Popularität. Er wirkte außerdem in vielen Fernsehproduktionen mit, unter anderem als Napoleon Bonaparte, Heinrich Himmler oder Joseph Goebbels. 1981 und 1985 war er in Terry Gilliams Kultfilmen Time Bandits und Brazil zu sehen. Außerdem übernahm er die Hauptrolle in der Kinderbuch-Verfilmung Ein Fall für die Borger als Fernsehserie. Gemeinsam mit Kenneth Branagh und Emma Thompson stand er 1989 in Branaghs Regiedebüt Henry V. vor der Kamera. Im gleichen Jahr wurde Holm ein Commander of the British Empire. Einen großen Erfolg hatte er 1997 mit Luc Bessons Science-Fiction-Film Das fünfte Element. 1998 wurde er von Königin Elisabeth II. aufgrund seiner Verdienste zum Ritter geschlagen. Seitdem darf er sich Sir nennen. 2001 war er an der Seite von Johnny Depp in From Hell zu sehen, außerdem spielte er in Der Herr der Ringe: Die Gefährten, Der Herr der Ringe: Die Rückkehr des Königs, Der Hobbit: Eine unerwartete Reise und Der Hobbit: Die Schlacht der Fünf Heere die Rolle des Bilbo Beutlin. Bereits 1981 hatte er in einem Herr der Ringe-Radiohörspiel die Rolle des Frodo Beutlin gesprochen. 2004 war er in Roland Emmerichs Katastrophenfilm The Day After Tomorrow zu sehen, im folgenden Jahr übernahm er eine Rolle in Martin Scorseses Film Aviator. 2006 stellte er in Oh Jerusalem den israelischen Staatsgründer und Ministerpräsidenten Ben Gurion dar. Ian Holms markante Stimme ist vor allem in Großbritannien sehr bekannt, da er häufig als Erzähler, Kommentator und Sprecher von Dokumentationen zum Einsatz kommt. Privat Von 1955 bis 1965 war er mit Lynn Mary Shaw verheiratet, mit der er die Töchter Jessica und Sarah-Jane hat. Aus der Beziehung zur Fotografin Bee Gilbert stammen Sohn Barnaby Holm (* 20. Februar 1967), der ebenfalls Schauspieler ist, und Tochter Melissa. Von 1982 bis 1986 war er mit der Schauspielerin Sophie Baker verheiratet, mit der er Sohn Harry (* 1981) hat. Von 1991 bis 2001 war Ian Holm in dritter Ehe mit der Schauspielerin Penelope Wilton verheiratet. Seine derzeitige (vierte) Gattin ist seit Dezember 2004 Sophie de Stempel.
