After sharing a kiss at the beginning of the summer, Robin and Barney are unsure how to handle their mutual attraction. After some consideration they tell the gang they have decided to remain just friends, but secretly continue seeing each other. They are able to get away with their secret romance for a couple months, but are discovered when Ted, Marshall and Lily walk in on them together. They explain to the gang that they are happy with their casual relationship, and didn’t want to complicate it by defining it. This is unacceptable to Lily, who pressures them to label their situation, and ultimately locks them in Robin’s room to force them to address it. Meanwhile, Ted is anxious about his first days as a professor at Columbia, which is made worse when he shows up at the wrong class and starts his lecture.

Der Sommer ist vorbei und Ted sieht seiner ersten Vorlesung als Architektur-Professor entgegen. Allerdings plagen ihn im Vorfeld Albträume, weshalb er überlegt, welche Art von Dozent er für seine Studenten sein will. Barney und Robin haben lange Zeit vorgegeben, nur gute Freunde zu sein, obwohl sie ständig miteinander im Bett waren. Nun besteht Lily darauf, dass sie ein Gespräch führen und ihre Beziehung definieren. Als die beiden daran kein Interesse haben, sperrt Lily sie ein.

Quand Marshall et le groupe découvrent que Barney et Robin sont hésitants quand à la manière de définir leur relation, Lily les forcent à se confronter à leur plus grande peur. Quand à Ted, il est anxieux à l'aube de son premier cours à l'université de Colombia.

Ted comincia la sua carriera da professore all'università, preoccupandosi di come impostare il suo "tono" da professore. Prova ad essere prima severo e poi buono ma, dopo 20 minuti, si rende conto di essere finito nell'aula sbagliata ed arriva in ritardo alla sua prima vera lezione. Gli amici, intanto, scoprono la relazione tra Robin e Barney e così Lily, con l'aiuto di Marshall, obbliga questi ultimi a definire questo rapporto. Dopo aver passato del tempo rinchiusi in camera di Robin i due decidono di fare il "discorso" per definire i loro sentimenti. Finiscono per dirsi che avendo già mentito a tutti sulla loro relazione segreta, possono continuare a farlo definendosi fidanzati. Così Lily li libera soddisfatta convinta che, anche se dicono di fingere, in fondo i loro sentimenti sono veri.
