Le corps d'un homme, totalement calciné, est retrouvé dans une tombe de fortune. Rapidement, les experts découvrent son identité : il s'agit d'un certain Bob Martin, qui a été blessé dans un accident avant de trouver la mort. Grissom et son équipe doivent déterminer comment il est passé de vie à trépas. L'autopsie révèle des traces de poudre de lessive sur le cadavre. Pendant ce temps, Nick cherche à élucider une autre affaire : le corps d'un randonneur a été découvert dans le désert. Or l'homme est mort noyé : un vrai casse-tête pour les experts, qui se trouvent face à une énigme particulièrement ardue...
