Brenda and the team investigate the grisly slaying of a family, and the only survivor is the drug-addled teen son. Meanwhile, a financial crisis rocks the LAPD, bringing about budget cuts, numerous changes --- and possibly Provenza’s early retirement. And Fritz hopes to move into a new house with Brenda.

Au milieu de la nuit, Brenda et son équipe sont appelés sur les lieux d'un homicide : des parents et leur fille de 12 ans ont été violemment assassinés dans leur maison. Brenda trouve le seul survivant de la tuerie caché dans le grenier : un adolescent terrorisé et au comportement étrange. Brenda le questionne sur son père mais s'aperçoit vite qu'il y a une zone d'ombre autour de cet homme. Qui était vraiment Kevin Wallace, et pourquoi son nom n'apparaît-il pas comme psychologue carcéral à la prison de Lompoc, comme l'affirme son fils ?... Brenda se trouve également confrontée à un plan de restriction budgétaire qui implique une réduction de son équipe...
