Alertés par un automobiliste qui a signalé un cheval harnaché en fuite, les experts se rendent à Old Palm. Cassidy Welles, une cavalière chevronnée, est retrouvée morte par pendaison, non loin des écuries de la famille Toring. Elle portait un collier avec un pendentif en lettres grecques, PhiGammaAlpha, signalant infailliblement une fraternité étudiante. Joanna Toring, la propriétaire de l'écurie, est aussitôt interrogée.
