The Enterprise arrives at a planet to establish diplomatic relations and finds itself in the middle of a "peaceful" war that threatens to destroy the ship.

Kirk est chargé par l'ambassadeur Fox de nouer des liens diplomatiques avec la planète Eminiar VII malgré l'interdiction imposée par Starfleet de prendre contact avec la planète. En effet, celle-ci est en guerre avec la planète voisine par ordinateur interposé. Celui-ci calcule les pertes de cette guerre virtuelle et "euthanasie" les victimes. Peu après l'équipage de l'Enterprise est déclaré "victime" à son tour.
