A shuttle crew from the USS Enterprise encounters a man out of history and his mysterious alien companion.

Die Diplomatin Nancy Hedford muss dringend medizinisch behandelt werden. Als Kirk, Spock und McCoy sie zur Enterprise bringen wollen, wird ihr Shuttle auf einem Planeten zur Landung gezwungen. Dort werden sie von Cochrane, dem Erfinder des Sol-Antriebes begrüßt.
