Lucas is plunged further into the depths of his past when Vaughn takes his manipulations to a new level. Ruth is approached and followed by an imbalanced council snooper who is convinced he's found a dead drop. She initially keeps her distance from him, but when her curiosity gets the better of her she ends up trapped in a situation not even he could have predicted. Lucas and Harry come face to face in the pursuit of the truth.

Parce qu'il a remarqué le comportement étrange d'une jeune femme, Keith Deery, un agent municipal, prend contact avec Ruth. Cette personne aurait laissé, sur un banc public, un message à l'attention d'un autre agent. Bien qu'elle ait découvert que Deery avait postulé à plusieurs reprises mais sans succès à un poste au MI-5, Ruth décide de mener l'enquête. De son côté, Harry en apprend davantage sur Lucas en enquêtant sur une explosion survenue quinze ans auparavant au sein d'une ambassade britannique. Quant à Vaughan, il ne lui reste que très peu de temps pour remplir sa part du marché...
