When a plague-like illness kills ten men inside a maximum security prison, Scully tries to get into the quarantine site and discover the cause and origin of the contagion, while Mulder and a group of US Marshals track two escapees who may be infected.

Mulder und Scully beteiligen sich an der Suche nach zwei entflohenen Sträflingen. Als sie dabei mit Truppen der Nationalgarde und Entseuchungskommandos konfrontiert werden, kommen sie einer Verschwörung auf die Spur, bei der in dem Gefängnis mit Wissen der Regierung Seuchenexperimente durchgeführt wurden. Die Regierung tut alles, um dies zu vertuschen, und Mulder und Scully brauchen die Entflohenen lebend, um ihren Verdacht zu beweisen.
