After several disappearances in a small town, Mulder and Scully investigate and find hundreds of human bones in the river. They discover that the man behind the town's main source of wealth, a chicken processing plant, has found a way to prolong his life through cannibalism.

In einer kleinen Stadt in Arkansas verschwindet ein Bundesbeamter. Als Mulder und Scully die Ermittlungen aufnehmen, stoßen sie auf eine statistisch fast ausgeschlossene Häufung der Creutzfeld-Jakob-Krankheit. Den beiden kommt der Verdacht, dass die Verbreitung dieser Krankheit etwas mit den Essgewohnheiten in der kleinen Ortschaft zu tun haben muss – doch noch ahnen sie nicht das entsetzliche Gehemnis, das dahinter steckt: Die Einwohner des Ortes sind Kannibalen.

Mulder et Scully viennent enquêter sur la disparition d'un inspecteur sanitaire et découvrent dans un champ les traces d'une récente cérémonie sacrificielle. Lorsque la maîtresse de cet homme, qui paraît beaucoup plus jeune que son âge, meurt dans des conditions inhabituelles, l'autopsie de son corps révèle la maladie de Creutzfeldt-Jakob.
