Mulder and Scully investigate a series of disappearances and attacks around a lake where Mulder believes that the local legend about a lake monster may be all too real. Frustrated Scully insightfully confronts Mulder about the futility of their work on the X-Files.

Mulder und Scully reisen nach Georgia an den Lake Heuvelman, weil dort in letzter Zeit viele Menschen auf unerklärliche Weise verschwunden sind. Die Einheimischen behaupten, dass die Verschwundenen wahrscheinlich Opfer eines prähistorischen Seeungeheuers geworden sind. Scully glaubt das genauso wenig wie der örtliche Sheriff und der Naturwissenschaftler Dr. Faraday. Bei einer nächtlichen Bootsfahrt machen Scully und Mulder dann Bekanntschaft mit dem Untier.
