Die Navy-Wissenschaftlerin Clea Thorson kommt bei einem Verkehrsunfall ums Leben. Bei der Obduktion der Leiche stellt Ducky (David McCallum) fest, dass die schwerkranke Frau anscheinend seit längerer Zeit einem gefährlichen Gift ausgesetzt war. Außerdem ist der Körper der Toten mit rätselhaften, chemischen Formeln beschriftet.
