Set during the Cold War period in the 1980s, The Americans is the story of Elizabeth and Philip Jennings, two Soviet KGB officers posing as an American married couple in the suburbs of Washington D.C. and their neighbor, Stan Beeman, an FBI Counterintelligence agent.

Im Mittelpunkt stehen die KGB-Spione Phillip und Elizabeth Jennings. Eigentlich ist ihre Ehe arrangiert, doch von Tag zu Tag verlieben sich die beiden tatsächlich immer mehr ineinander. Ihre Beziehung wird allerdings immer komplizierter, je stärker sich der Kalte Krieg aufheizt. Dass die beiden inzwischen zwei Kinder, haben, die vollkommen in die amerikanische Gesellschaft eingebunden sind und nichts von der wahren Identität ihrer Eltern wissen, macht die Sache nicht einfacher.
