After chasing an unexplained capsule through time, the TARDIS lands in London, during an air raid. Rose investigates when a small child wearing a gasmask, standing on a rooftop, continuously calls out for his mummy. After floating above the city on a barrage balloon, Rose is swept off her feet by another time traveller – Captain Jack Harkness. Meanwhile, The Doctor follows a teenaged girl to a meeting of the homeless children of the Blitz. Here, the child in the gasmask is terrorising them with a parade of strange events, constantly asking for his mother.

Der Doktor und Rose verfolgen einen geheimnisvollen Gegenstand durch eine Zeitturbulenz ins London des Jahres 1941und landen dort inmitten eines deutschen Luftangriffes. Rose wird von einem Fremden, der sich als Captain Jack Harkness vorstellt, gerettet. Er ist ein Abenteurer der auch aus einer anderen Zeit gekommen ist. Außerdem taucht dauernd ein unheimlicher, kleiner Junge auf, der nach seiner Mutter ruft, und dessen Gesicht hinter einer Gasmaske steckt.

Rose et le Docteur se retrouvent en 1941 à Londres. Ils sont à la recherche d'un mystérieux cylindre gardé par l'armée. Le Docteur rencontre une jeune femme qui l'emmène auprès d'enfants sans toit. Tous sont terrorisés par un petit garçon inquiétant qui porte un masque à gaz et se comporte étrangement.
