A long time ago, the ninth legion of the Roman army vanished into the mists of Scotland. Bill has a theory about what happened, and the Doctor has a time machine. But when they arrive in ancient Aberdeenshire, what they find is a far greater threat than any army. In a cairn, on a hillside, is a doorway leading to the end of the world.

Die TARDIS landet im zweiten Jahrhundert und Bill ist voller Hoffnung, die verschollene Neunte Legion zu finden und ihr Geheimnis zu lüften. Der Doktor und Nardole treffen auf die einheimischen Pikten, die ein Tor zu einer anderen Dimension bewachen, damit die Lichtfresser genannte Bestie in Schach gehalten wird. Angesichts der Bedrohung durch die Römer hat die junge Torwächterin Kar ihre Pflicht vernachlässigt. Nun bedroht die unheimliche Bestie die ganze Erde.
