A new technologically-superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius. The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. Lone CIA analyst Jack Ryan has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it - because the entire Russian naval and air commands are trying to find Ramius, too. Der russische Kommandant Ramius setzt sich samt Mannschaft mit seinem dank neuer Antriebssysteme nahezu unortbaren Atom-U-Boot "Roter Oktober" in Richtung Westen ab. Einem US-U-Boot gelingt es, die "Roter Oktober" zu orten. Der Krisenstab befürchtet, Ramius plane auf eigene Faust einen Angriff auf die USA. Nur CIA-Agent Jack Ryan glaubt, dass es sich bei Ramius um einen Überläufer handelt. Er geht an Bord des US-U-Boots und nimmt Kontakt mit Ramius auf, der sich als Überläufer entpuppt, seine Mannschaft aber im Glauben gelassen hat, ihr Einsatz sei ein Angriff. Mit vereinten Kräften gilt es nun, die Attacke eines russischen U-Boots abzuwehren.
