Gesagt, getan: Ted hält um Victorias Hand an. Sie willigt ein – allerdings unter der Bedingung, dass er seine Freundschaft zu Robin beendet. Indes macht sich Robin Sorgen über Barneys seelischen Zustand: Ihm ist ein kleiner Hund zugelaufen, zu dem er ein seltsames, emotionales Verhältnis aufgebaut hat.

Alla fine Ted si decide a farle la proposta, ma Victoria pone come condizione che tronchi la sua amicizia con Robin. Ted ci riflette a lungo, ma alla fine capisce di non poterlo fare e Victoria lo pianta. Nel frattempo, Barney, sempre più squinternato per la rottura con Quinn, si affeziona moltissimo ad un cane trovato per strada che però poi, a malincuore, deve restituire alla legittima padrona.
