Un homme est retrouvé mort avec un sac contenant trois têtes. Castle, qui souffre toujours du mensonge de Beckett, décide de changer de partenaire pour cette enquête. Il choisit Ethan Slaughter qui travaille aussi sur l'affaire des trois têtes, mais Castle découvre que son nouveau partenaire est violent, immoral et que ses techniques ne sont pas forcément légales. De son côté, Beckett commence à se demander si ce n'était pas une erreur de prétendre une amnésie post-traumatique mais masque toujours ses sentiments.
