Catherine, blessée par balle par les hommes de Mark Gabriel, s'enfuit sous la protection de Russell et trouve refuge auprès d'une prostituée. Elle n'ose pas refaire surface de peur d'être à nouveau la cible des tueurs à gage de l'homme d'affaires. Le docteur Robbins vient la soigner en cachette dans une chambre de motel. L'enquête portant sur les agissements de Mark Gabriel suit son cours. Les policiers découvrent peu à peu que les indices ont été mis en scène pour faire porter les soupçons sur lui. Russell a reçu un faux e-mail provenant prétendument de Catherine, et lui annonçant sa démission...
