Dans un casino de Las Vegas, le corps sans vie d'un homme est retrouvé. Le défunt, un pédiatre américain, est rapidement identifié par la police. Le capitaine Jim Brass fait mettre tout le bâtiment sous scellé car le meurtrier est très probablement encore sur place. Un suspect est rapidement appréhendé. Mais Brass se tourne vers les experts de la police scientifique pour qu'ils déterminent si c'est bien l'auteur de cet homicide. Russell et son équipe sont face à une difficulté de taille.
