La justice du Colorado annonce qu'un assassin pourrait bien être sur le point d'être relaxé. Brass ne décolère pas : il sait que cette libération est à mettre sur le compte d'un policier aux états de service plus que douteux. Or, Russell et son équipe estiment qu'un homicide plus ancien et à ce jour non résolu pourrait bien correspondre au mode opératoire et surtout à l'emploi du temps du criminel en question. Brass donne carte blanche aux experts de la police scientifique afin de reprendre cette enquête à zéro. Mais les chances de parvenir à compléter les preuves à charge avant la libération de tueur sont maigres...
