Captain Archer and the crew discover a fully inhabited, civilized though less advanced Earth-like planet. Disguised to look like its inhabitants, they pay the planet an exploratory visit where they learn that a pernicious illness is afflicting the local population. As Archer seeks to help them find the malady's source, he finds himself in a close encounter with a comely female alien.

Die Enterprise entdeckt einen Planeten mit einer Zivilisation, die sich auf einem Entwicklungsstand vergleichbar mit dem des späten 19. Jahrhunderts auf der Erde befindet. Die Crew beschließt, diese Kultur zu studieren, wozu die Mitglieder der Außenmission ihr Aussehen verändern müssen, um sich der fremden Kultur anzupassen und nicht aufzufallen. Dabei werden sie auf dem Planeten in ein tödliches Geheimnis hineingezogen, welches schon mehreren Einwohnern das Leben gekostet hatte.

Le capitaine Archer et son équipage découvrent une planète très peuplée qui ressemble étrangement à la Terre telle qu'elle était au XIXe siècle. Ils décident de se faire passer pour des habitants de cette mystérieuse planète afin d'enquêter sur ce nouveau territoire, qui leur est terriblement familier. Au cours d'une analyse de routine, T'Pol détecte la présence d'un réacteur matière-antimatière dans les sous-sols d'une des villes. La présence d'un tel dispositif amène l'équipage à se méfier un peu plus de cette planète. Le capitaine Archer tente de comprendre ce qui se passe en ces lieux...
