While consulting with the NTSB at the scene of the wreck, Don learns that this tragedy is one of a series of recreated accidents involving railroad negligence. As is the pattern with the previous train wrecks, an undecipherable numerical code is left at the site, which Don recruits Charlie to solve. By breaking the code, Charlie is able to establish that this accident was a recreation of a deadly wreck that left only one survivor several years ago. Don's investigation leads him and his team to a dangerous standoff with their suspect, who has surprising ties to the railway system.

Eine Serie von Zugunglücken erweist sich für das FBI als sorgfältig geplante Anschläge. Die codierten Bekennerschreiben werfen allerdings selbst für Charlie Rätsel auf. Klar ist aber, dass jemand versucht, spektakuläre Zugunfälle nachzustellen. Und ein Vorfall fehlt noch: das Bahnunglück am Cajon-Pass, bei dem 37 Menschen starben. Dies deckt sich auch mit den Angaben im Bekennerbrief. Für sieben Zahlen und einen Buchstaben haben die Ermittler aber immer noch keine Erklärung.

En enquêtant sur un déraillement de train, Don réalise que cette tragédie fait partie d'une série d'accidents volontaires récréés à partir de carambolages passés impliquant la négligence des réseaux ferrés. A chaque collision, le saboteur laisse en signature un tableau de chiffres dont Charlie doit trouver la clé avant la date commémorative d'une terrible catastrophe sur le plan écologique. Ce dernier commence à affirmer ses sentiments envers Amita.
