Stardate: Unknown. To help find the apparently untraceable murderer of a young ensign, who had recently received a battlefield decoration, Ezri Dax reluctantly calls up the residual consciousness remnant of her symbiont’s past, the psychopathic murderer host, Joran.

Dopo una notte di bevute, Ezri Dax accompagna Ilario, un membro dell'equipaggio DS9, al suo alloggio. La mattina seguente Ilario viene trovato morto nel suo alloggio. Julian Bashir determina che Ilario è stato ucciso con un proiettile di tritanio sparato da breve distanza. Viene stabilito che l'arma è un TR-116, un prototipo progettato dalla Flotta Stellare per essere impiegato in ambienti dove i phaser sarebbero stati inefficaci. Odo però è perplesso in quanto solitamente quel tipo di arma lascia residui di polvere sulla vittima quando viene colpita da breve distanza.
