Stardate: 43917.4. Spock's Vulcan father, Sarek, boards the Enterprise to negotiate political relations with the Legaran. However, Sarek has contract Bendii syndrome, which causes a Vulcan to gradually lose control, and become overpowered with emotions.

Der alternde Sarek wird zu einer diplomatischen Konferenz auf die Enterprise gebracht. Dort findet man heraus, daß sein Geist langsam verfällt und daß er Perioden der Senilität und der Unlogik durchmacht. Nur sein Assistent kann Sareks Emotionen kontrollieren. Als der Ansturm der Emotionen zu groß wird, erklärt sich Picard bereit, eine Gedankenverschmelzung mit Sarek einzugehen, um ihm genug Zeit zu verschaffen, die Verhandlungen erfolgreich abzuschließen.
