Über 30 Jahre sind vergangen, seitdem die Rebellen den zweiten Todesstern über Endor zerstört und damit die entscheidende Schlacht gegen die finsteren Mächte des Imperiums gewonnen haben. Doch aus der Asche des Bösen ist die Erste Ordnung empor gestiegen und hat die Herrschaft wieder an sich gerissen. Während Supreme Leader Snoke die Zügel im Hintergrund in den Händen hält, schickt er den Lichtschwert schwingenden Kylo Ren ins Feld, um die neue Weltordnung auch in den verstecktesten Winkeln der Galaxis zu verbreiten. Von großer Politik aber weiß Rey auf dem Wüstenplaneten Jakku zunächst nicht viel. Die junge Frau verbringt ihre Tage damit, die karge Landschaft nach Schrott abzusuchen, den sie danach verkauft. Sie ist allein, wartet auf ihre Familie – bis sie die Bekanntschaft von Finn macht, einem ehemaligen Sturmtruppler, den die Untaten der Ersten Ordnung abgeschreckt haben.

Il y a bien longtemps, dans une galaxie lointaine… Luke Skywalker est porté disparu. Le pilote Poe est en mission secrète sur une planète pour le retrouver. Au moment où la diabolique armée "Premier Ordre" apparaît en détruisant tout sur son passage, il arrive à cacher la position géographique de l'ancien maître Jedi dans son droïde BB-8. Capturé par les larbins du machiavélique Kylo Ren, Poe est libéré par le soldat ennemi Finn qui est en pleine crise existentielle. Pendant ce temps, BB-8 est recueillie par Rey, une pilleuse d'épaves qui sera bientôt plongée dans une quête qui la dépasse.
